Day 3: Mercedes Australian Fashion Week

Day 3: Mercedes Australian Fashion Week

On the third day in Sydney there were many varied reports circulating in the papers and on every one's lips about the quality of of some of the labels showing. The critics were scathing about poor originality and lack-luster effort. Not so of Vein with massive interest from high profile department stores in the Asian region. Looking at the above shoe it's easy to see why.

As part of the five days of Australian Fashion Week I am posting a sneak preview of key designs in the Summer 2006/2007 collection which will be available in September 2006.

Today's piece shows vintage broguing with a wash-off bone leather on a formal sneak. The design is a blurring off lines between formal and sneaker, old and new. Aged leather vs sleek profile. Vintage broguing vs new sneak construction. These shoes are extremely light and supremely comfortable. Wear them with anything. They are so damn hot, people won't even notice your clothes. Just jokes ;) They go great with blue denim straight cut, a pair black slim line jeans, or khaki dress pants.

If you would like to pre-order your pair email chris@veinwear.com and quote code F3718-Bone.

Vein will be featured in 3 major parades this Fashion Week with clothes by Leopold, Red Cordial and Trimapee. We will have runway pics for you very soon!

Day 2: Mercedes Australian Fashion Week

Day 2: Mercedes Australian Fashion Week

The second day of fashionable festivities in Sydney, Australia saw parades by Bettina Liano, Bare (by Rebecca Davies) and Alex Perry. All good stuff, but the only thing for men to sink their teeth into were the models. (Not that that's ever a "bad" thing). But the lack of masculine fashion was obvious and that's why this footwear injection is extremely timely. Pictured above is the Sting-Ray Loafer from Vein's Summer 2006/2007 collection.

As part of the five days of Aussie Fashion week I will be "sneak previewing" designs that will not be available until September 2006. This Sting-Ray Loafer is really an exquisite men's shoe in that it sports a rarely used texture.

In dark brown it is actually subtle enough to wear with a suit. If you are tired of sporting sneakers at the base of your Hugo suit, but are too young to borrow Dad's Gucci slippers, consider these fashionable yet casual alternatives. Sure they may not be perfect for the office...(you'll never get a raise if you dress that well because your boss will think you definitely have more income than him/her)...but the office is the last place a fashionable suit should be worn. Drive these wheels some where they'll get the "credit" they deserve ;)

If you would like to pre-order your pair email chris@veinwear.com and quote the code TX99-008A Brown Sting-Ray.

Day 1: Mercedes Australian Fashion Week

Day 1: Mercedes Australian Fashion Week

There are five exciting days of Australian Fashion Week and today was the first. There is plenty of talent when it comes to clothing and female shoes. But you're not interested in that, are you? It's all about men's shoes this year. And since Vein Wear is Australia's only designer men's shoe label we will have a sneak preview look at a pair each day from the Summer 2006/7 collection. The collection won't be released until September 2006.

Pictured above you can see an amazing design. It's an almond shaped loafer in cream with red speed stripe. The diamond cut-out leather is perforated all the way through making it a very forward Summer style with plenty of air flow. Wear them with or without socks as your feet will be breezy and care-free.

What is different about this casual fashion shoe is combination of the formal shape with sporty speed stripe. Wear them with denim, light linen pants or red-dye jeans. They go perfect with a cream and red canvas belt.

If you would like to pre-order your pair email chris@veinwear.com and quote the code TX99-008A Cream & Red.

Gieves and Hawkes Chelsea Boot

Gieves and Hawkes Chelsea Boot

This season G&H offers a beautiful classic Chelsea boot in Dark Leaf Tan. This now classic style boot was introduced in the 60's and traditionally features a clean and simple design with elastic sides. It is generally considered a casual boot.

The color of the leather is deep and rich with woody hues. How good!

The elasticised sides make them very comfortable on the ankle and easy to put on and take off. It does however reduce the weather proofing of the boot.

G&H take roughly 12 weeks to make each boot. Don't be too impressed though because if they had a cobbler working on it for all that time he'd only be making a dollar per hour and G&H would be broke even then. They are an English "bench-made" boot with a Goodyear welt construction. The Goodyear welt is a traditional method of manufacturing that produces comfort, excellent shape retention, water resistance and repairable qualities. They feature leather insoles. G&H boast that each boot pass through 160 separate processes from the careful selection and cutting of the leather to the final polishing and packing.

G&H has been around since Gieves (founded 1785) and Hawkes (founded 1771) merged. They are famously located at Number 1 Saville Row, one of most renowned streets for tailoring in the UK. Since 1809 when they dressed King George III they have been the tailors to the royals. Today they have Royal Warrants of Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and The Prince of Wales. Impressive.

You can purchase these boots next time you visit Saville Row. If you can't wait till then, purchase online at www.gievesandhawkes.com. They will set you back US$400.00. Well worth every penny.

Kenneth Cole Wing Shot

Kenneth Cole Suede Wing-Top Loafer

The low profile and tight curved shaping of this loafer make it the stand-out in Kenneth's current collection. The classic broguing shows beautiful detailing. The style is aggressive in shape and understated in design. The bone suede is luxurious.

The only thing that could improve this design would be a lighter colored sole unit to better compliment the light color of the suede.

Wear these shoes with so many casual outfits. Denim, suede, cords, pinstripes in any color you like.

These new steps will set you back only US$235.00 from KC stores or online. Check it out at www.kennethcole.com.

If you don't know the Kenneth Cole story you must have your head in the sand. So briefly, for those with sandy ears...KC borrowed a massive truck and pretended to be a film production company working on the project "The Birth of a Shoe Company". He pulled up in central New York and started selling shoes out the back of the truck. It went from there. For the full story visit this link...KC Story.

n.d.c. Brogue

n.d.c. brogue.

Nom de Code (Code Name) has create this classic vintage brogue as a star of their Spring/Summer 2006 collection. The classic brogue design is "freshened" up with an aged leather look and sprung toe.

Wear them with olive cords, a brown pin stripe or casual suit.

n.d.c. has been making premium quality shoes for only 5 years. Their collection shows great discipline in designing to their label philosophy. It is a label that avoids hype and lets the shoe speak for itself. They use top quality materials and are passionate about construction. To be simple and understated is the main goal. Mark Nason Brown Casual Boot

Behold this sensational Mark Nason boot. Mark works for Sketchers, but don't hold that against him. While the Mark Nason label is a subsidiary of Sketchers, Mark has total creative freedom to express his passion for boots inspired by rock and roll.

The design of this boot sports both of the Nason signature features. The first is the cross design on the upper. I'm not sure if it is a religious or state inspired symbol but I know it looks great. The layering and stitching is artful. It doesn't look over done because of the common color of the leathers. This shoe with contrasting colored leathers would be garish. The second feature is the dragon on the sole. I love the use of the sole for further creative expression, but must say I dislike the dragon design on the shoe. Unfortunately it is not an original symbol and lacks the class that the rest of the shoe exudes. My bias against the dragon symbol admittedly may stem from the fact that I have it tattooed on my glute. I'll never forget when Angelina Jolie got the same tattoo and I realized that soon thousands of people would also have...the same tattoo. Alas, I guess you only get tattoos so that you may one day regret them. At least it is on the sole :)

The curvature at the top of the boot has a hint of western but not too much. If you're from the city people, don't pretend to be a cowboy (even if you can ride a horse). The shaft is narrow enough to wear under the leg of your pants.

Wear these boots with your best denim (distressed or not) by Tsubi or Religion. The toe is narrow enough to be considered directional fashion so you be comfortable in any shirt as long as it has a story. Don't dare wear them with a classic polo though. Mark suggests a vintage tee. As you can imagine boots, jeans and a vintage tee is practically his uniform. But you can definitely get away with a pair of brown pin-stripe fashion pants and a cuffed shirt from a designer like Leopold.

Mark doesn't talk much about the construction of the shoe. I assume that the stitching on the sole is not just cosmetic though. If you're supposed to wear them at rock concerts, I would hope they are a solid construction.

Priced at around US$500+ you can purchase them online at www.zappos.com or for US stockists visit www.marknason.com.

About Vein Wear

My name is Christopher McCallum. I am the lead designer for Vein Wear. Vein is an Australian designer male footwear label. We stock in about 30 stores in Australia and New Zealand. We also sell online direct to customers in the US, UK, Japan, Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Canada.
I will use this first post to introduce Vein, but in the future I intend to focus on hot shoes from all over the world and from any designer label. I hope to find more guys and girls around the place that are interested in finding unique and fashion forward footwear.

Worldwide, 11 billion pairs of shoes are produced each year. So, in terms of quantity, Vein is not a big player. And that’s a fact we’re proud of. You see, we make “designer” shoes for exceptional individuals, like you. Men who value superior footwear.

What it means to be “designer”.

The term “designer” is often used loosely in the fashion industry, and certainly so by a number of factories mass producing shoes that copy the fashion leaders.

We do it differently. How you’d expect a true designer shoe to be created for you. At Vein, each original design is sketched, first as a conceptual, and then worked and re-worked into final drawings with graphite on paper, by head Vein designer, Christopher McCallum. Then, a prototype shoe is meticulously crafted by hand.

It is why Vein shoes are worn on the runway by Australia’s hottest clothing labels at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week and L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. For runway pics, visit the Recent Events link at the veinwear.com website.

Why make shoes?

Vein shoes are for men who understand that why a shoe was made is just as important as how it was made.

At Vein, the why is very simple and clear … we handcraft shoes that say everything you want to, without saying a word. The answer to how we do it is equally simple and clear … it comes from over 25 years hand crafting the finest fashion shoes for gentlemen.

For example, to create sleek lines and slim profile, 600 pounds of pressure must be applied to the leather in 2 dimensions. Yet to create the tightest curves and beautiful lines that are the signature of a Vein shoe, our craftspeople have learned how to apply 800 pounds of pressure … on 3 dimensions. Only elite cobblers will take the extra time to do it, and invest in the specialised tools. We do it because it is what you’d expect from Australia’s premier footwear designer.

You want shoes that really stand out. Yes, our new designs are eye-catching from any distance. But it’s up close where the intricate detailing comes into its own. Exceptional detailing and a technically demanding pattern require skilful and fastidious cobbling. Each new design requires new skills, techniques and knowledge. From start to finish, we practise cutting, lining, bonding, stitching and baking. The end result is higher qualified cobblers and of course, the amazing Vein shoes.

Not one reject created

At the core of Vein’s design-leading body, is the passion of a quality perfectionist. At least four full time “quality controllers” or “mentors” oversee all the major stages (initial training on each style, cutting, sewing, bonding and shaping). If any imperfections are found at any stage of the process, they are empowered to immediately stop the production to fix the problem. Other labels will continue in the face of faults and pick out rejects at the end. At Vein we simply do not make rejects.

Also rigorously tested is the leather for colour, strength and consistencies. Each pair of shoes is made from the same piece of leather so that they match perfectly. Vein’s founder personally hand picks the highest grade leathers directly from international tanneries. The leather bonding is tested in both hot and cold environments to ensure the shoes endure both summer and winter extremes. In contrast, mass production shoes are just that, produced in mass.

The end result of all the extra care and effort we take at Vein is a flawless shoe and the accompanying satisfaction and pride. It is expensive to do? Absolutely! But we do it because we want you to get what you pay for, and more.
