This is a case of credit where credit is not due. The shoe pictured in the Jan 2009 FHM at No.1 says it is one of ours. Alas it is not. We do have a similar style of canvas shoe (pictured at bottom right), but without the espadrilles thing...ewe.
You'll find the Vein shoe at a higher value than the other cheaper options. The reasons for this is that we like to make "shoes" as opposed to "canvas socks". Vein's are the only ones that have a full leather lining and toe and heel stiffeners for foot support and to keep them from looking like little more than a dirty sock in a week or so.
The article text is below. I have to warn you that along with a backpackers' romp fest comes crabs (fungi from not wearing socks), genital warts (bunions) and herpies (heel and arch pain):
As with girlfriends, so it is with
footwear - laying out a huge
emotional and financial investment in
something long term just means
getting stuck with the same pair for
months. On the other hand the cool,
simple slip-on - to milk the gratuitous
analogy a little further - is the footwear
equivalent of a backpackers' romp fest.

A couple of tips: there are a lot of
patterns out there, so be wary of
clashes - checks and stripes should
only go next to plain shorts or jeans, for
example. Also, only wear the chunkier
types with long trousers. Other than
that, just play the field ...
