Australian Fashion Week

It's that time of year again...Australian Fashion Week in Sydney.

Yes, the time of year when the best and the most beautiful in the country flock to the harbour town dressed in their bestest. They'll strut, they'll sip champagne, they'll pretend to be famous...hehe.

The cameras will roll, the phones will flash. The twitter stream will be thick and the blogs rife. And somewhere, hopefully not lost to genuine buyers, the fashion hopefuls and made-its and jaded designers will sell some clothes.

This year Vein shoes will be the proud and humble footwear accessory on the runway for two brilliant labels. The first is the sophisticated and sensational Leopold.

The second is a new runway collaboration for us. We will be pairing with {Un}NakeD. So a little introduction (in their own words):

About UnNakeD
Created in 2006, UnNakeD is a leading Australia based fashion label, producing fresh Australian made apparel. Based in Sydney the UnNakeD team is committed to delivering a street inspired limited edition product that has been missing in the Australian market for sometime.

Keep it fresh, Keep it real! Look better UnNakeD.

About The Designers…
UnNakeD founder, Andy McIntyre, believes it’s important to engage and inspire people to create and contribute to urban culture and their own fashion style.

Following on from a successful career with high-flying roles at a number of large international brands, Andy created UnNakeD as he felt there was a real opportunity and market for Australian made limited edition street based product.

London born, Mark Rogers has spent the last 12 years designing for top International design houses such as Top Shop, Miss Selfridges, Warehouse, John Lewis and Insight.

Mark’s love for street wear pushes the fresh new direction of UnNakeD, creating the perfect cut for a freer lifestyle.

In his spare time Mark hits the ski slops instructing to the rich and famous…

About Our Tees…
We tear away from using a pre-developed product to print designs on! Instead we have created a fashion cut, that is a 100% Australian made cotton tee. It’s easy to wear all year round. Our unique cut meshed with the funky designs will make you feel good and look great!

See both the shows on Tuesday April 28th 2:30pm at The OPT at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

If you miss it, don't worry, I'll put photos up as quick as I can.

New Chris Worfold - Vein Store Banner - Sneak Peak

Here's a sneak peak at the new Vein Store artistic banner installation...work in progress by Chris Worfold. It's an incredibly engaging piece. Come in to the Vein Store to check it out next week.

We will also have some complimentary mini-folios of related works by Chris Worfold if you are inspired.

Westside News - Vein Wear Shining Against The Odds

FACED with a crushing loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars, most people would give up on running their own business - but not Bardon’s Christopher McCallum.

The 27-year-old owner and head designer of men’s shoe fashion line Vein Wear had to rebuild his company in 2004 after a retailer went bust, taking his entire stock of footwear with them.

“It was a massive devastation at the time,” Mr McCallum said.

“The clients fled overseas facing criminal charges and all of the stock in their stores was seized and sold by the liquidators so I was left with nothing.

“The news couldn’t have come at a worse time. My wife Szuting and I had just been married in Taiwan with her family, and were coming back to Australia for a second wedding with my family when I got the news.”

However, Mr McCallum never gave up. In 2007 he opened his own retail store in the trendy TCB mall in Fortitude Valley and select fashion shops all over Australia and New Zealand now carry his shoes, including Always Habit in Paddington.

“Late last year the Vein Store won Best Fashion Store of 2008 in the Quest Business Achiever Awards, which was really great, although for me the best reward is when someone comes in and spends their hard-earned money on my product,” he said.

Mrs McCallum also has her own designer footwear label for women, Kitty Croquet, available in the Vein store.

The couple has recently set up a workshop in Taipei.

“It’s a very small operation, but it’s completely owned by us, and run by five master craftsmen who make every shoe themselves,” Mr McCallum said.

An autumn line, now in stores, is described by Mr McCallum as dark and sexy.

Shoe Review: Rock & Republic Pancho

I stumbled across this very cool design, the Pancho, on the new Zappos.com "Couture" site. It comes from designer label Rock & Republic.

The lines are great. It features a wide diagonal lapel that starts on both sides in front of the ball of the foot and extends unbroken to the tongue. Three laces form a minimal tie that says just enough but not too much.

At only US$300.00 the only thing letting this shoe down is the "textile" lining. Seriously, why not just fully leather line it?

Rock & Republic is an American jeans brand founded by cyclist Michael Ball in 2002. R&R became famous for a pair of bum-hugging jeans designed by Victoria Beckham, called the "VB Rocks". In Australia we also believe VB rocks...but for a different reason, ahem, Merv Hughes? They very quickly diluted the range with everything from baby clothes and maternity wear to sunnies and men's shoes. Check out their painful flash site at RockandRepublic.com.
